WHITE LAKE — A Langlade County grouse hunter fired two shots at a black bear earlier this month after the bruin attacked the man's dog, then turned on the hunter.
"He told me he shot the first time when the bear was less than 10 yards away and fired the second shot when the bear was even closer," said Andy Dryja, Department of Natural Resources warden for eastern Langlade County.
A search failed to locate the bear, which is believed to have survived.
Dryja, who said he was not authorized to release the hunter's name, indicated the man, who is described as about 60 and from the Racine-Kenosha area, was hunting grouse and woodcock with his wife and son Oct. 7 in the Town of Evergreen.
"The dog had a fractured jaw and broken teeth, apparently when the bear took a swipe at its head," Dryja said.
"The guy carried his dog out. The dog's injuries took more than 100 staples to fix."
