There are a few openings left for the Jackson County Minnesota Birding Weekend offered Oct. 19 & 20. Productive Jackson County sites such as Heron Lake and the many wetlands and woodlands near the Iowa border will be toured as birders search for a wide array of migrants, including Black-headed Gulls and Great-tailed Grackles. The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:
An Arctic Tern was seen briefly on Lake Superior on Sept. 28 on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry of Park Point in Duluth. Bruce Fall found a Pacific Loon on the 29th near the Sky Harbor Airport of Park Point, and a Red-Throated Loon was seen here on Oct. 6.
A female Scarlet Tanager was at the General Mills Research Nature Area in Hennepin County on Oct. 8, and another was near Knife River in Lake County on the 6th.
Bohemian Waxwings were in western Wright County on Oct. 10, and Pete Makousky found a Spotted Towhee at Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley, Anoka County, on the 4th. There have also been recent reports of Surf Scoter, Long-Tailed Duck, Thayer's Gull, Great Black-Backed Gull, and American Pipit.
