Minnesota birding report 3.9.11
During the month of March, watch for early returning migrants such as Canada geese, bald eagles, and American Kestrels. Also watch for the first eastern bluebirds and wood ducks that arrive in search of nest boxes. And some of the best waterfowl migration activity occurs from mid-March through mid-April.

The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:
On March 1, a male Barrow's Goldeneye was reported from Montissippi Park in Monticello in Wright County. It is being seen with a group of Common Goldeneye near the usual winter congregation of Trumpeter Swans.
A few Long-Tailed Ducks were seen on Lake Superior in northeastern Two Harbors in Lake County on February 28.
Also on the 28th, Mike Hendrickson found eleven Spruce Grouse along Lake County Road 2, roughly one and one-half miles north of the Sand River.
A Townsend's Solitaire continues to be seen at the north end of Lake Vadnais feeding in the cedars on the west side of Sucker Lake Road, roughly one-third of a mile south of Ramsey County Road F. It was found as recently as February 27.
Bohemian Waxwings have been reported in increasing numbers recently, and large flocks have been reported from the counties of Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Todd, Aitkin, and Crow Wing. New spring migrants arriving over the last week include Gadwall, Green-Winged Teal, Redhead, Common Merganser, Great Blue Heron, Killdeer, Bald Eagle, and Lapland Longspur.
