Highlights this week and weekend include the Original Olmsted County Gold Rush at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds in Rochester, the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta - Minnesota's Spiciest Celebration in the District del Sol neighborhood of St. Paul, Smucker's Stars on Ice at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, International Migratory Bird Day and Plant, Shrub & Tree Sale at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Zimmerman, a Candlelight Hike at Big Bog State Park in Waskish, and the Gunflint Green Up along the Gunflint Trail, running northwest of Grand Marais.

The Original Olmsted County Gold Rush will be held at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds in Rochester, Friday through Sunday, May 7-9, with roughly 1,500 dealers from across the United States displaying and selling antiques, furniture, primitives, glassware, clocks, watches, lamps, coins and more! Downtown Plainview and Carley State Park will host the 3rd Annual Carley Bluebell Festival on Saturday, May 8. The 9th Annual Wings on the Prairie festival will be held at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife's Waterfowl Production Area in Windom, Saturday, May 8, with early bird walks, a raptor program, Trumpeter Swan release, mistnetting, children's activities, a duck-calling program, retriever demonstrations, bison burger lunch, and a raffle drawing. This is the only location in Minnesota to observe the release of North America's largest waterfowl species. The district headquarters is located one mile east of Windom on Highway 71. And while in Windom on May 8, head to the Good Samaritan Society Sogge Memorial Chapel for a Mother's Day Bazaar, with hand-crafted jewelry and products created by women and girls rescued from human trafficking. Farmamerica in Waseca will be the site of Springtime on the Farm on May 8, with lots of baby animals, garden planting, games, activities, food and refreshments, as well as many agricultural and community structures dating back to 1850 on a 120-acre site. Preston Trout Days will be held throughout the city of Preston, Friday through Sunday, May 14-16. The Anoka County Fairgrounds in the city of Anoka will be the site of the 6th Annual Fish Fair, Friday and Saturday, May 7 & 8. The Fish Fair is a fishing carnival for kids and their families. A Shepherds Harvest Festival will be held at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Lake Elmo, Saturday And Sunday, May 8 & 9. Lake Bronson State Park, located two miles east of the town of Lake Bronson will offer Sharp Tailed Grouse Viewing Blind Reservations daily through May 15. Between early April and mid-May you may reserve a spot at the Lake Bronson viewing blind, and witness the comical and entertaining display of the male Sharp Tailed Grouse as they attempt to attract a mate. This is truly one of nature's most spectacular events. Viewing is best at dawn. Reservations are required and are limited to one per day. A Breakfast with the Birds will be offered at Hayes Lake State Park, located southeast of the town of Roseau, from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. on May 15, with a chance to search various habitats for birds that have returned for the season. Start off the morning with a camp breakfast cooked by the Friends of Hayes Lake. Please register in advance. And, on Sunday, May 23, Hayes Lake will be the site of Geocaching 101, with hands-on and basic introduction to using a GPS unit and information on treasure hunt programs offered at state parks. The Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes will be the site of the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, Thursday through Sunday, May 20-23. Come celebrate the spring bird migration in a unique transition zone of tall grass prairie, northern hardwood and conifer forests. Over 170 bird species were recorded during last year's event. Highlights include birding field trips, workshops, socials, vendors, and presentations on how to identify birds by sound and how birds fly.
