Arboretum Steinhauer Trust Gallery Exhibit opens May 1
"Songs of Spring: Wood Warblers of the Arboretum" features James Miller's series of 30 exquisitely rendered colored pencil drawings of warblers that nest in or migrate through the Arboretum. The exhibit runs from May 1 through June 28. Along with the drawing of each species there is a brief description of its winter/summer habitat and its migration route between habitats.

Miller, an award-winning architect, turned to pencil drawing both as an interest and as an outlet for his creativity. He eventually left the profession to concentrate on art and travel.
Working exclusively in colored pencil, Miller produces detailed interpretations of architectural and natural subject. An avid birder and nature photographer, he has concentrated recently on wildlife subjects, especially birds.

"Songbirds, especially wood warblers, are today's equivalent of the canary-in-the-mine," says Miller.  "As suitable habitat for nesting disappears or is fragmented, some of these colorful birds disappearing."

Miller has participated in solo and group exhibitions and has won several awards, including one of the Best of Show awards at the juried exhibitions at the Hardy Gallery in Door County, Wisconsin. His works are included in private, corporate and institutional collections.

The Steinhauer Trust Gallery is located within the Arboretum Visitor Center which is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 12:30 - 4 p.m. on weekends. Admission is free. Telephone: 608.263.7888.

The gallery houses bimonthly exhibits of wall-hung art by a variety of regional artists who explore, interpret, honor and celebrate Wisconsin's native plants, animals and landscapes. Most items on exhibit are for sale. Those interested in purchasing are asked to contact the artist. Profits from sales support Arboretum projects.
