Two dead, one critical in Lake Winnebago accident
Town of Quinney - A man, 44, and girl, 10, died after the pickup truck they were riding in fell through the ice on Lake Winnebago on Saturday - the opening day of the sturgeon spearing season, which draws thousands of vehicles out on the frozen lake every year.
An 8-year-old girl who was also in the truck was in critical condition late Saturday at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, a spokesman said.
The man who died is the father of one of the girls, said Calumet County Sheriff Gerald Pagel. Relatives identified him as Dan Kleinhans, 44, of St. Nazianz.
The other girl is a friend of the daughter. Names of the victims were not released. It was unclear if the man's daughter or her friend died.
Relatives of the victims said the three were spearing sturgeon. At 11:30 a.m., the man was driving his truck about a half-mile south of the town of Quinney when the front of the pickup hit a large crack in the ice that had opened Tuesday, Pagel said. Witnesses said the truck sank quickly..
