Bird count spurs new interest

HOLMEN, Wis. I participated in the 11th Great Backyard Bird Count for the first time last weekend and I have to admit, I really enjoyed it.

I’m not an avid birdwatcher by any stretch of the imagination. I don’t head into the woods, fields or swamps for the sole purpose of watching birds. However, I see my share of birds during my travels.

If I see a bird that I can’t identify, I try to remember to pull out my old “Birds of North America” reference book when I return home. Fortunately, I only opened my book once during my counts on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
