Madison - Continued mild winters in northern Wisconsin, in conjunction with limited numbers of earn-a-buck and herd-control units during the 2005 season, have deer numbers on the increase once again, according to DNR deer ecologist Keith Warnke.
With the state heading into the second year of a trial program that replaces the October antlerless deer season with a four-day December statewide doe hunt, Warnke said he doubts that hunters will be able to make the 'two does to one buck' goal that would have to be attained to stave off the return to October doe seasons in 2008.
'The hunting groups that have a big stake in the deer season arranged this trial, and I support it (the December season),' Warnke said. 'But, if I had to make a prediction, I would predict that we would not reach the 2:1 ratio in the necessary units, which would then bring the October hunt back on the table for the 2008 deer season.'
