Minnesota Birding Report as of Friday, October 24

In general, October offers a wonderful opportunity to see the migration of birds of prey along Hawk Ridge in Duluth. This location is an excellent vantage point for birders wanting to see sharp-shinned and broad-winged hawks, peregrine falcons, and other raptors.

The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:

On October 19, two Plegadis Ibis were in the southeast corner of the junction of Wilkin County Road 26 and State Highway 9. Another was seen on the 18th at the Kvermo Wildlife Management Area in Lincoln County, located roughly one and one-half miles east of the town of Hendricks.

A possible Barrow’s Goldeneye was reported on October 19 at Wigwam Bay on Lake Mille Lacs. The exact location was near the rocks just off shore at the junction of Mille Lacs County Road 25 and U.S. Highway 169.

A Red Phalarope was seen on October 22 along the breakwater at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors, in Lake County.

A Pacific Loon was on Lake Superior on the 19th, just out from the LaFayette Square boardwalk behind the Park Point Community Club in Duluth.

On October 21, a Carolina Wren was in Dan and Sandy Thimgan’s yard in Battle Lake, in Otter Tail County.

And a Townsend’s Solitaire was seen on the 18th at the Ann Lake Campground within the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Sherburne County.
