Snowmobile Trail Report - 1/13/17

Updates are posted as information is received from trail managers. We have about 10 inches of fresh snow and all trails are open and in excellent to good condition. We received about 10 inches of snow this week. The conditions are excellent to good. All snowmobile trails will be groomed by the weekend unless mentioned otherwise in the reports below - Scroll down for individual snowmobile club reports. There may be a couple icy areas where creeks get dammed up and water floods over the trail. Some of our motorized trails welcome winter ATV and UTV riders; scroll down for the ATV, UTV & Off-Road Motorcycle Trail Report.

Park Falls Sno-Gypsies (west of Park Falls/Tuscobia) - 1/13/17 - Tuscobia Trail  is groomed and in great shape. Trail 80 is groomed and in great shape. Trails 89, 90 and 91 in the Butternut Lake area are being groomed tonight.

Lugerville Chasers (northwest Price County) - 1/13/17 - The trails are in excellent condition. There are no trouble spots.

Eisenstein Bushwackers (east of Park Falls / Fifield) - 1/13/17 - The trails were groomed on 1/12/17 and are in great shape! Enjoy and be safe.

Prentice Bushbenders (southeast Price County / Prentice-Ogema area) – 1/12/17 - All trails will be groomed by the end of the day and the condition should be excellent.

Fifield Sno-Drovers (northeast Price County / Pike Lake area) - 1/12/17 - All of our trails are in excellent condition.  We have a solid frozen base and with the snow we got the last few days they are great.  The swamp areas on Trail #120 and about 5 miles north of Intersection #96 (about 1 mile north of where it crosses Sheep Ranch Road) may still be a bit rough as we’re not going over them with the big groomer yet, but we have been grooming them with a tracked ATV and small drag so they are pretty darn good. Enjoy the trails!
Trail #106 going north into Iron County will not be groomed until Iron County begins grooming their trails. The Pike Lake chain has been marked; riders should stay on the marked trail as there had been slush reported between the snow and ice if you are off the trail.

Northwoods Hi-Riders (northeast of Phillips / Solberg Lake area) - 1/12/17 -  All trails in the Solberg Lake area are snow covered and groomed and in Excellent riding condition. It's a Winter Wonderland out there! Logging continues on trail 102 northeast of Solberg Lake.

Catawba Driftsplitters (southwest Price County / Catawba-Kennan) - 1/12/17 - Trails are being groomed; no issues to report; excellent condition.

Phillips Chaparrals (south & east of Phillips) - 1/12/17 - The trails are in excellent condition and all have been groomed. On Trail #116, there is an open creek next to the trail south of Intersection #94 but they are able to groom through there. Long Lake is marked.

Elk River Pioneers (south & west of Soo & Wilson Lakes) - 1/13/17 - The trails have been groomed. Wilson Lake has been marked.

Pine Line Rail Trail - (2 miles south of Prentice to Ogema) -  The Price County portion of the trail will remain open through March 31. The Taylor County portion may close and reopen periodically throughout the season; contact Taylor County Tourism at 715-748-4729 or Taylor County Forest at 715-748-1486.

Cross-Country Ski, Snowshoe & Fat Bike Trail Report - 1/13/17

Updates are posted as information is received from trail managers. We have about 10 inches of fresh snow since Mon., January 9. All trails are open and in excellent to good condition with ongoing grooming/tracking as needed, and as time and conditions permit. Snowshoers and fat bikes must stay to the side away from the classic track.

Phillips School Forest Trail - 1/12/17 - The trail is in great shape, the whole  thing...able to put a track down today on the first half of the course, the back part is used for skating. 1/10/17 - Our new winter fat bike trail is currently un-rideable. With grooming and snowshoe activity throughout the week, they should be good by Friday or Saturday.  I'll report back then! Snowshoe users and fat bike riders stay off of the groomed ski trail except where the single track trails cross the ski trail.

Flambeau Hills Trail - 1/11/17 - The trail system will be groomed by the weekend. The trail system is in excellent shape with a solid base and full snow cover throughout the trail system; come and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Flambeau River. State Trail Pass is Required.

Wintergreen Trail - 1/11/17 - A, B, D, Shortcut and Kiddie groomed and tracked. I did four or more passes on A and B, Shortcut got three, and D and Kiddie got two.  I would have done more but the snow was soft and the hills on those two are steep.  With the cold weather everything should set up great.  It was too dark when I finished to get a snow depth measurement on the trails, but the base in the woods is about 14".  I got a couple of passes on C with just the sled to pack it down, some water was poking through in the back end by the beaver ponds.  Hope it freezes up! Questions or comments on the trails can be sent to Brady Howe at 715-762-5104 or bjhowe@fs.fed.us.

Newman Springs Trail - 1/12/17 - Loops A and E were groomed and tracked, and C and D were roller packed.  The trails are getting a really great base, no need for rock skis anymore.  With the cold temperatures tonight the trails should set up really well and be in great condition for the weekend.

Squaw Creek / Solberg Lake Trail - 1/10/17 - .We last skied the Squaw Creek/Solberg Lake trail on Saturday, 1/7/17. The trail was in excellent condition with a very firm base and well defined track. I strongly recommend the out and back trail section which is across the road from the Hicks Landing Trail Head. It runs from the trail head to Solberg Lake Road near the park entrance. It is a beautiful section of trail.  The new snow will improve trail conditions even more. We have plans to groom the trail on Wednesday of Thursday 1/11/17 or 1/12/17 so it will be in great shape for this weekend.

Holy Cross Trail - 1/3/17 - Ski conditions are good at this time. Grooming and reforming and laying classic track will occur on 1/7/17.

High Point Trail - 1/11/17 - For the current trail conditions, contact High Point Village Resort at 715-767-5287.

Timm's Hill Trail - 1/8/17 – The trail is in excellent condition; it was groomed and tracks set on 1/8/17.

Palmquist Farm Trail - 1/3/17 - Our trails are open and groomed today 1/3/17.  Conditions are good to very good with an 8-10 inch base and 2 inches of new snow. For the current trail conditions, contact Palmquist Farm at 715-564-2558.

DNR Fishing Report - 1/11/17

Ice thickness is now averaging 9-12 inches in most places.  Travel has been good with most slushy areas firmed up, but recent snowfall will make foot travel more difficult.   With frigid temperatures, fishing pressure has been down significantly and the bite has slowed as well.  Anglers that are braving the elements are catching fish, but the fish have been picky and the bite has been light.  Crappies are hitting small jigs tipped with minnows or wax worms over deep water and are suspended off the bottom.  Bluegills are being found in deep weeds or over cribs.  Walleyes are still being caught on tip ups in the evenings on mud flats in 4-8 feet of water.  With the warm up coming next week, the bite should pick up again in time for many of the local ice fishing contests.

Fishing & Hunting Guide Reports
1/11/17 - The area lake ice thickness is around 12 inches. Of course each lake is different so conditions can vary and caution is always advised. Walleye action has been sporadic with our morning bite being best. Tip ups and shiners have provided the best bite. Water depths of 6-12 ft have been the target area. Northern pike have provided the best action throughout the day with suckers 1ft of the bottom near shallow weedy areas. Some nice fish are showing up. Crappie action was ok this week with many fish suspended 6 to 8ft off the bottom. Rosie reds on small jigs provided best results. There was a snowmobile which collided with an ice shack on Butternut lake. Please be careful when traveling by ATV, sled or vehicle as many ice shacks are now being placed on the lakes. Be aware when approaching these shacks because there are laws governing the speed limit within a certain distance.  Good Luck Fishing! Joe Brezinski, Northland Guide Service
