Canvasback limit up; duck, goose seasons set
Bob Riepenhoff
Bayfield - Duck hunters will see an increase in the daily canvasback duck bag limit from one to two birds this fall under a waterfowl hunting package unanimously approved by the Natural Resources Board at its meeting here last week.
"The canvasback population is at a record high," Kent Van Horn, migratory bird specialist with the Department of Natural Resources, told the board. "It's higher than the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service thought possible."
For other ducks, Van Horn said: "The bag limit is exactly the same as last year."
The daily bag limit will be six ducks, not to include more than four mallards of which only one may be a hen; two wood ducks, one black duck, two redheads, two scaup, one pintail and two canvasbacks. In addition, hunters can take five mergansers, to include not more than two hooded mergansers, and 15 coots.
