Midwest fishing report 1.11.11

AREA LAKES: Snow cover should help with slick surfaces. Best fishing remains on farm ponds and subdivision ponds. MAZONIA NOTE: Mazonia North is open to ice fishing at your own risk, and Mik-Lurch reported some outstanding bluegills. Mazonia South opens Monday. Ice conditions should be good.

CENTRAL WISCONSIN: From Mike Norris: Fox Lake, Dodge County: Walleyes and pike shallow in the evening on tip-ups and shiners in the Government area. Crappies biting in deeper water near Maple Point on small spoons tipped with minnow heads or spikes. Bluegills best late in the Jug. Little Green: Perch galore. Big Green: Just froze over, should be drivable in another week. Lake Puckaway: Catfish are biting on shiners, but pike and walleye are slow.

CHAIN O?LAKES AREA: Triangle reported crappie are top bite; look for them suspended in 12 feet on small minnows or spikes on glow jigs. Bluegills are also good; try shallow with gold, red or black jigs with wax worms. Walleyes are good on Marie; try jigging Swedish Pimples or Rapalas tipped with minnow heads or tip-ups with roaches. White bass are spotty; best on Mineola. Art Frisell said it is one of the best years he has seen for pike in Lake County, including a 38-incher from a secret lake. NOTE: Ed Rzewnicki posted on Facebook that there will be a JD Spinner Memorial Ice Get-Together from 6 to 9 a.m. Saturday on Pistakee.

DELAVAN/GENEVA LAKES AREA, WIS.: Geneva Lake Bait & Tackle reported an 18-pound pike and some walleyes in 18 feet on Geneva by Library Park. Perch take sorting (same depth). Delavan is good early for bluegills and late for big pike. Pleasant has good bluegills and crappie (especially at night).

DOWNSTATE NOTES: POWERTON: For open water, this is it. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. EMIQUON: New permits are required for 2011. EVERGREEN: New permits are in.

LAKEFRONT: Snow cover should help with slick ice. There?s plenty of harbor ice in Chicago, but perch take much sorting. Those busting ice are taking more keeper perch at Navy Pier. Henry?s has parking-lot passes and pier passes for fishermen.

MADISON LAKES, WIS.: D&S Bait reported some decent pike and an 11-pound walleye from Mendota, but overall ice fishing is fair. Some big catfish off Governor?s Island in 20 to 30 feet.

NORTHERN WISCONSIN: Ice conditions are improved; ATV and snowmobile travel are generally OK. EAGLE RIVER: The Chamber report indicated good pike in 15 feet or less. Walleyes are best on cloudy days or early and late. Largemouth are in the same area as pike. Crappie are suspended and variable.

NORTHWEST INDIANA: Mik-Lurch reported decent bluegills at Willow Slough. A few pike on tip-ups by the flagpole on the Illinois side of Wolf Lake.

SHABBONA LAKE: Guide Jay Angel said fishing with Jim Kopjo over deeper fish cribs with tungsten jigs and soft plastics produced nice crappie over the weekend.

SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN LAKEFRONT: Arden Katz reported slow ice fishing at Kenosha. The Wisconsin DNR reported much of the Root iced over and some ice fishing in the harbor.
