Southern Lake Michigan Fishing Report: July 26, 2010
Kenosha Co. In Kenosha trollers have been catching some chinooks and coho in 60 to 100 feet of water. J-plugs, spoons, and some flies have all taken fish. Some rainbows have also been reported from trollers in 200 to 225 feet of water. Fishing in the Kenosha harbor has been spotty, with some browns, chinooks, and coho taken near the Holiday Inn in the early morning and later evening hours. Alewives and spoons have produced the most. Perch anglers have occasionally been catching a few off of the south pier and in Southport Marina, and the boats continue to catch some at the bubbler. Both crab tails and minnows have produced.
Racine Co. In Racine the bite has slowed somewhat for trollers, but some chinooks, coho, and browns have still been taken in 25 to 45 feet of water on spoons and J-plugs. Trout and salmon fishing off the piers has slowed significantly, and perch fishing from shore has been hit-or-miss. When the perch are biting, crab tails, minnows, and green plastics have all been effective. Boats looking for perch have taken limits at the south breakwater on crab tails, minnows, and small shiners.
Milwaukee Co. In Milwaukee trollers have been catching mostly chinooks, along with a few coho and rainbows. Fish have been caught in 60 to 80 feet of water, and spoons have taken the majority of fish. Perch anglers fishing from shore have had some limited success at Cupertino pier and the Lake Express Ferry dock. Small shiners have produced the most when fished early in the morning.
Ozaukee Co. There was strong fishing effort from the ramps, moderate fishing effort from the piers and light effort from the harbor/shore and Amsterdam Road ramp. There was action to report from the piers, ramps and harbor/shore. On the 24th, the temperature was in the low to mid 80?s, skies were partly cloudy and there was a moderate wind to the south. On the 25th, the temperature was in the high 60?s to low 70?s, skies were mostly sunny and there was a light wind to the west. Port Washington Ramp: The water at the ramp was brown with low to moderate clarity and the temperature was 60-62? F. Twenty five of 31 boats interviewed caught at least one fish, with an average 4.7 fish per boat. Chinook salmon, coho salmon, rainbow trout and a brown trout were caught. Fish were caught in 17 to 120 feet of water, from the surface to right off the bottom with spoons, flies and j-plugs on planer boards, leadcore, dipsy divers and downriggers. Port Washington Utility: The water in the area was brown with low to moderate clarity. Yellow perch were caught with minnows. Port Washington Piers: The water off the lakeside was calm, 52-54? F at the end of the pier and 56-58? F further in, and blue green with moderate clarity. On the harbor side of the pier, the water was brown with low clarity. The action has slowed down; Chinook salmon and a rainbow trout were caught. Fish were caught throughout the day on alewives. Amsterdam Rd. Ramp: The water at the ramp was 58-62? F, light brown with low to moderate clarity and there was light wave action. No boats were interviewed.
Sheboygan Co. There was moderate fishing effort from the ramps and Cleveland ramps, and light fishing effort from the piers, shore and no effort from Edgewater power plant. There was action to report from the ramps. On the 24th, the temperature was in the low to mid 80?s, skies were partly cloudy and there was a moderate wind to the east. On the 25th, the temperature was in the high 60?s, skies were mostly sunny and there was little or no wind. Sheboygan Ramps: The water at the ramp was 68-72? F and light brown with low to moderate clarity. Sixteen of 19 boats interviewed caught at least one fish, with an average of 4.2 fish per boat. Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and lake trout were caught. Most of the fish were caught in 60 to 120 feet of water, 45 to 90 feet down, with spoons, flies and j-plugs on planer boards, leadcore, dipsy divers and downriggers. Sheboygan Piers: The water off the north pier was choppy and brownish blue green with moderate clarity. The water in the harbor was 70-74? F, milky brown with low clarity. The water on the lakeside of the south pier was calm, 64-68? F, and brown with low to moderate clarity. Undersized rainbow trout were caught off the north pier with night crawlers. Cleveland Ramp: The Cleveland Derby was this weekend, so there was more effort from the ramp than usual.
