Chetek Chain O' Lakes fishing report 2.11.09

The fishing action on the Chetek Chain of Lakes has been very good for fishermen getting out after what I hope is the last arctic blast for the season.
The walleye fishermen with the will and patience to get out and fish for them are still having success throughout the chain of lakes. The key to some of their success is shallow gravel points with some weed growth in close proximity to the area. Anglers may not hook them one night, but they might the next-that's where the will and patience comes in. Tip-ups tipped with a small shiner or a small walleye sucker set a foot off of the bottom seems to be working for the fishermen. I prefer a shiner.

The northern pike action has been very good, too. Plenty of flags are popping throughout the day, with a nice keeper or two measuring 26 inches or better being taken home by area fishermen. Some keys to their success are to have some weeds in the area and be in five to 10 feet of water. If some wood is in the area, that's an added plus, just don't let them run too far and get snagged in the wood. Tip-ups tipped with a medium- to large-sized shiner and some sweet-smelling fish attractant on a minnow setup fished one to three feet off of the bottom these seem to work well.

Fishermen should also remember that game fishing season ends March 1 on inland waters of Wisconsin. It opens back up May 1.

Panfishing on the Chetek chain seems to be going wild. Fishermen are reporting numbers of fish being caught all over and in both deep and shallow waters. Anglers have been able to take home some nice bluegills and crappies once in a great while. Some days, the action seems to be nonstop. It might be a good time to take the kids ice fishing-they won't get bored and the weather is not too bad.

Baits vary for the fishermen. Some are using small orange and chartreuse moon glitters, purple and white moon glitters or purple or black pierces, the smaller the better. Small flirty girtys and other baits of the same colors are working, too. If the action slows down a bit, just move around a little. Tip baits with a waxie or a silver wiggler. A drop or two of fish scent isn't going to hurt either. It will cover up any unwanted scent on a bait from hands that could prevent anglers from catching fish.
