EDITORIAL: Trust hunters to down deer in Wausau

City Council members seem determined to complicate the relatively simple matter of allowing deer hunting in rural sections of Wausau.

Back in July, council members revised city weapons ordinances to allow for bow hunting in areas where deer have proven a problem.

They put in place some reasonable rules: Hunters must be in elevated stands, so that arrows that miss or penetrate deer go into the ground, not whistling through the neighborhood. And hunters cannot shoot within 200 feet of other buildings unless the owners of those buildings have given permission.

Now, less than two weeks before the bow season opens, members of the city's Public Health and Safety Committee are reconsidering -- and trying to answer every possible concern.
