WDNR proposes 60-day duck season
MADISON — A 60-day duck hunting season that includes a restrictive six-bird daily bag limit and reduced scaup hunting opportunities has been proposed by the state Department of Natural Resources.
Duck hunting would run Sept. 27 to Nov. 25 in the northern zone and Oct. 4 to Dec. 7 (including a five-day break) in the southern zone under guidelines offered the state by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Opening-day hunting will begin at 9 a.m.
Duck and exterior zone goose hunting in the southern zone will be closed Oct. 13-17, providing the traditional break sought by duck hunters to extend the season into December.
"With the overall picture on the 2008 waterfowl breeding populations mixed, hunters can expect some significant changes in 2008 hunting seasons," said Kent Van Horn, DNR waterfowl biologist.
