BHS Demons Shooting Team Earns Gold at SCTP Regional Championships April 7, 2013 -- The Burlington High School Demons Shooting Team kicked off the 2013 tournament season by winning the gold medal in the Varsity Trap division and High Over All award at 2013 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Midwest Regional Championships held from April 5th to 7th at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, IL. Nearly 300 young athletes from twenty-four youth shooting programs across the Midwest attended the event. Twenty-six members of the BHS team made the 300-mile trek to Sparta.
The Demons Varsity No.1 squad of Alexa McCarthy, Myles Walker, Cody Schilz, Jordan Hintz and Christian Jensen led the entire field of 55 squads breaking 474 of 500 targets to earn the gold. Making the feat even more impressive is that the team shot Saturday in 30 mph gusting winds.
The Demons Intermediate Trap team of Cody McCarthy, Ethan Jensen, Hunter Conrad, Jared Hahn and Weston Uhlenhake earned silver medals for their 443 score.
Varsity Sporting Clays team No. 1 of Myles Walker, Jordan Hintz and Cody Schilz brought home the bronze with a 247 of 300.
The Demons Open (mixed categories) Skeet team of Cody McCarthy, Hunter Conrad and Courtenay Krusemark also won the bronze medal with a score of 214.
Mariah Kerr won silver and bronze individual medals in Ladies High School Skeet and Sporting Clays. Cody McCarthy and Hunter Conrad took second and third in Intermediate Skeet and 2012 BHS graduate Ethan Kerr won three medals in the collegiate division.
The 26 members of the Demons team won the prestigious High Over All (combination of the highest scores in Trap, Skeet & Sporting Clays) award leaving first-year head coach Chet Tuinstra with a large smile. ?I think it was very impressive how well our kids shot in the wind on Saturday, It was a great start to the 2013 season.?
A total of five Southeastern Wisconsin High School teams made the trip to Sparta including Milwaukee Marquette, Westosha Central, Waterford and Wilmot.
The parents and coaches of the BHS Demons Shooting Team will be holding a fundraising banquet to raise funds for the team on April 19th at the Veterans Terrace in Burlington. Doors open at 5:00 pm and $25.00 admission includes buffet dinner and great music by Tim Castle and Young Southern at 7:00 pm. There will be raffles, games and silent auctions with all proceeds benefitting the team. Tickets are available from team members or at the door the night of the event.
