Wisconsin Statewide Birding Report 6.15.12
There are still some shorebirds trickling through the state on their way to arctic nesting grounds. Good finds include red-necked phalaropes in Jefferson County and nesting black-necked stilts in Winnebago County. There is a lingering white-faced ibis at Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge and a glossy ibis is being seen in Winnebago County. A little gull is being seen in Sheboygan, this is a rare bird for Wisconsin. Many of the short-distance migrants are fledging young including bluebirds, robins, meadowlarks, woodcock and house wrens. Sandhill crane chicks are growing rapidly and can be viewed feeding with parents in wetlands and agricultural fields. Birders up north are now reporting ruffed grouse birds and many waterfowl broods in wetlands. Warblers, tanagers, and orioles will begin feeding and fledging young this week in the southern half of the state.
