Major changes coming to CWD management units
By Jerry Davis / Freelance outdoors writer

Several significant changes are being implemented in Deer Management Unit 71 CWD and all other chronic wasting disease management units this fall. Some of these changes will also impact non-chronic wasting disease management units.  ADVERTISEMENT

Hunters in portions of Richland, Vernon and Crawford counties, who hunt in DMU 71 CWD, will not be able to donate extra deer carcasses to local food pantries as they have in past years.

The reason?

Cost and budget cutbacks halt this donation practice and also reduce testing.

Last year there were more than 12,000 deer tested from the Herd Reduction zones, which includes 71 CWD. This year only 1,000 deer will be tested.
