Demons Strike Gold at State SCTP Trapshoot HARTFORD, WI June 18, 2011 -- The Burlington High School Demons Trapshooting Team has shown it's strength once again this season winning two out of four gold medals at the 2011 WI Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) State shoot held Saturday June 18, 2011 at the Hartford Gun Club. It was the largest SCTP shoot ever held in Wisconsin with nearly 360 young athletes from all over the state attempting to break 100 clay targets each. The team who's top-five competitors broke the most targets is declared the champion in each of four age categories. At the end of a long day of competition, Burlington shooters placed all four squads on the podium. SCTP Executive Director Russ Arnold was on hand to observe the event.
The Burlington Varsity squad was led by sophomore's Jordan Hintz and Christian Jensen who each broke 99 of 100 targets. They were joined by Ethan Kerr and Adam Tunstra who tallied 97 each and Myles Walker who carded a 96 giving the Demons the gold medal score of 488/500 besting the Berlin Target Terminators by 15 birds and the Osceola Rod & Gun Club team by 34 targets.
The Demons Junior Varsity squad was guided by freshman Mariah Kerr and Alex Fennig who carded 92's with Anna Sommers 89, Connor Schultz 88, and Christian Whitford's 86 totaling 447 to win the bronze behind Sauk County and Westosha Central.
Clayton DeFord was Burlington's top Intermediate Advanced shooter with a 92 and he was joined by Nolan Schenning, Ali Knight, Alexa McCarthy and Hunter Wage to break 442 of 500 targets in-route to the silver medal behind the Delavan Sportsman's Club.
Gold was also in store for the Demons Intermediate Entry squad of Jarod Hahn, Hunter Conrad, Cody McCarthy, Weston Uhlenhake and Cullen Kruiser who broke 422 of 500 clay pigeons on the day finishing nearly 50 targets ahead of Westosha Central and Sauk County.
Per SCTP rules, Jordan Hintz's score of 99 and reverse run of 33 gave him the Grand Champion plaque over teammate Christian Jensen who nearly ran 100-straight missing the 96th bird for a reverse run of 4. Jensen was awarded the Varsity Gold trophy. Not to be outdone were the Lady Demons, with Becca Alby taking home the Varsity girls silver with a 91 and Mariah Kerr who broke 92 to earn the Junior Varsity girls gold. In the Intermediate Advanced division the girls showed well with Ali Knight's 90 taking the gold over fellow Demon Alexa McCarthy's silver award of 89. The young Demons scored well in the Intermediate Entry division with Jarod Hahn's 92 earning Gold and a bronze for Hunter Conrad with an 87.
Many of the BHS shooters will partake in the SCTP National finals held July 13-16 at the World Shooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta, IL. The Demons will compete in several events in Sparta including Skeet and Sporting Clays in addition to American Trap.
The team will be fundraising over the next few weeks to help generate additional funds to help offset the cost of traveling to the Nationals in Sparta.

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation is an educational-athletic organization that exists to introduce school-age youths to the clay target sports and to facilitate their continued involvement by providing, promoting, and perpetuating opportunities to safely and enjoyably participate and compete in a high-quality, team-based sport led by trained adult coaches focused on enhancing the personal growth and development of their athletes.
