    Minocqua area fishing report 2.9.10

It's mid February which usually means we're in the middle of the mid winter blahs. Fish are being caught and due to the lack of snow on the ice, many lakes are seeing better than average live green weeds this year. Don't move too far away from the deepest green weeds you can find. Walleyes, pike, crappies, gills and some perch.

Perch: Good. Best consistent action over deep mud flats of 22-30'. Tip Hali jigs, pimples, flickers with a wiggler. Bounce jig in mud to simulate feeding fish. Once perch move in and get active, switch to tougher red spikes. Nice perch in the deep edges of weeds (12-16'). Medium fatheads, rosies, small shiners on tipdowns, jigging spoons with waxies also effective.

Walleye: Best action starting around 4:30pm through evening. Some very nice eyes (6-8# fish) caught by anglers setting up at 4am and fishing daybreak. Humps to 16' out over deep water (30-40') best for larger walleyes taking big shiners and suckers on tip-ups. #5, #7 jigging raps and shads also productive, especially during peak bites of 6-7pm. Eater walleyes best on medium shiners along weed edges, suckers over sandgrass in 18-28'.

Pike: Good. Not as much action as Dec/Jan, but very nice fish of 30-37" including a 42" giant last week. Big shiners equals big pike. Look for bright green weeds in 6-12' and begin.

White fish: Good. Get out very early (4/5am) to find fish shallow (40') then move out to 70-80' depth as sun rises. Pimples, Kastmasters, Macho minnow, rattle spoons with a gob of waxies or Gulp Alive minnow heads.

Crappies: Fair to Good. Look deep. Work 22-30' depths. Breaks of hard to soft bottom. Most bites not occuring until 3:30-4pm, some very early am. Tip downs with rosies best. Up in 10-12' cabbage, flutter Little Cecils, small Russian spoons tipped with waxies of #8 white rocker tipped with plastic.

Bluegills: Fair. Most reports of smaller fish. With warmer temps anglers getting out to locate gills. Look for suspended fish outside of weed eges in 12-18' from 9am till bout 4pm, then action dies as walleyes move in.

While we need snow to help fill these lakes, very little landing here. Most to our south, some north. Not real cold, try fishing very early to set up for better walleyes and pike. Ice thickness averaging 16-19", travel excellent.
