Port Washington - Ozaukee County sheriff's dispatchers cannot recall ever getting a complaint from homeowners troubled by people shining powerful spotlights into fields to locate deer or other animals, Sheriff Maury Straub said Tuesday.

"Our second-shift dispatchers were at a loss to recall when shining was ever a problem," Straub told supervisors on the County Board's Public Safety Committee. "They have taken a lot of calls, however, from people inquiring when they can shine."

County Supervisor Tim Kaul of the Town of Grafton has proposed an ordinance that would ban shining in the county, saying the practice has become more of a nuisance to homeowners and livestock as the county has become more populated and spotlights have become more powerful.

Shining, which is often done from vehicles to locate animals and track their movements, is legal year-round in Wisconsin, with certain limitations.
