Starting with the numerous rules changes in the last 10 or 12 years, the scope of deer hunting in the Badger State has changed drastically, and not necessarily for the better.

When I began deer hunting, it was so simple. You got one tag per license. When bow season was on, you got to shoot one deer, period. Buck or doe. When you filled your tag, your season was done. When gun season got close, you applied for a hunters choice permit, and if you were lucky enough to be drawn, you were just about guaranteed to bring home some venison that year. But if you happened to have the "choice tag" you could allow someone else in your group to fill it for you, provided you were within sight or earshot of the person who took the deer. There weren't any of these extra T-zones, CWD hunts, special muzzleloader hunts or youth hunts. What a jumbled mess deer hunting has become in Wisconsin.
