Hog wild: Man being tried in release of feral pigs

The first clue: A motorist in Crawford County struck and killed a wild sow and five piglets in April 2002.
The second clue: Farmers noticed their corn and soybean fields were rooted up by pigs. Then more wild pig sightings, more crop damage and more car vs. pig crashes.
Since Wisconsin isn’t known for a native wild pig population, officials couldn’t figure out how a nasty bunch of feral oinkers suddenly took up residence in the southwestern corner of the state several years ago and began chewing up farm fields, killing baby wildlife and destroying native habitat. Authorities suspected they didn’t come by themselves.
According to court documents and Wisconsin investigators, the pigs journeyed here from Texas in a trailer driven by a Texas man accused of opening the door and watching 31 animals scamper into the countryside near Gays Mills in February 2002.
