Minnesota Birding Report  Friday, September 26

In general, September offers a wonderful opportunity to see the migration of birds of prey along Hawk Ridge in Duluth. This location is an excellent vantage point for birders wanting to see sharp-shinned and broad-winged hawks, peregrine falcons, and other raptors.

The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:

On September 19, a Rock Wren was reported from the top of the Inspiration Peak State Wayside Park in Otter Tail County. This location is just west of the town of Urbank. No further updates have been provided. There was an interesting report of another Rock Wren on September 25 in the Grand Marais, Cook County, campground. It was reported from a large dirt pile near the yellow maintenance garages.

Two Parasitic Jaegers were at the end of Park Point in Duluth on September 21. At the same time, a possible Little Gull was seen off the 12th Street access to the point.

The first Harris’s Sparrow of the fall was reported on September 19 along the Blue Hill Trail at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Sherburne County. The first Snow Buntings were seen on September 21 in Duluth. The first Ross’s Geese of the fall were reported at Lakeview Golf Course in Two Harbors, in Lake County, on September 24, and a migrant Spotted Towhee was in a yard in Moorhead, in Clay County, on the same day.
