Minnesota Birding Report Friday, September 19
In general, September offers a wonderful opportunity to see the migration of birds of prey along Hawk Ridge in Duluth. This location is an excellent vantage point for birders wanting to see sharp-shinned and broad-winged hawks, peregrine falcons, and other raptors.
The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:
A sub-adult Mississippi Kite was seen early in the afternoon on September 17 in northwestern Ramsey County, however the bird moved on to the northwest and was not relocated.
A Sabine’s Gull was at the north end of Lake Bemidji in Beltrami County on September 13, and again on September 14, but it has now apparently left the area. A Little Gull was also in this general area on September 14 & 15. It was seen at the tip of Diamond Point Park, near 20th Avenue North and Birchmont Drive.
There was a secondhand report of a Western Wood-Pewee found September 12 at the Park Point Recreation Area in Duluth. The bird was near the boardwalk south of the ball fields.
On September 14, a Snowy Egret was on the shore of the Minnesota River along the auto-tour road of Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge in Big Stone County.
In Hennepin County, a Summer Tanager visited a Maple Grove yard on September 17, but no additional details are available.
Southbound migrants reported this past week include Snow Goose, Caspian Tern, American Pipit, and Lapland Longspur.
