Plum Creek manages
hunter-friendly forests

THERE ARE many factors that make northern Wisconsin a paradise for conservation and outdoor recreation — so many that we sometimes overlook the smaller, yet significant, partners.
The focus on land open for hunting is often on the 1.5-million-acre Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, or the 442,000-acre Northern Highland-America Legion State Forest.
Vilas County provides another 42,000 acres of forestland that is managed for both sustainable forestry and recreation — especially hunting and fishing. Ditto for Oneida County.
But there is another provider of open-access forestland, one cherished in central Wisconsin, but almost invisible here. Industrial forests that are well managed for wildlife and open to the public are scattered throughout the North Woods.
As an example, Plum Creek owns 400,000 acres of forestland in 26 counties. But some of the company’s biggest holdings are in Oneida, Forest and Langlade counties — a bunch of it south of Three Lakes.
Because Plum Creek’s core business is timber production, its lands are aggressively managed. That means consistent silviculture that creates both young successional forests and longer-lived hardwood
forests.
