Wisconsin Northern zone bass season opens June 21

MADISON – The northern zone bass season opens June 21 and surveys show that a good number of anglers are geared for pursuit.

A 2006-2007 statewide mail survey revealed that large and smallmouth bass are the third most angler-targeted species and the second most commonly caught following panfish.

“These results aren’t too surprising given that the bass fishery is in excellent condition throughout Wisconsin,” says Joe Hennessy, warm water fisheries specialist with the Department of Natural Resources. “Working with anglers for good management, we continue to see larger bass and more of them.”

Additionally, bass fishing locations are abundant and you don’t need elaborate tackle to get hooked.

“No matter where you live, there is probably quality bass fishing nearby,” says Hennessy. “Large and smallmouth bass can be found in lakes, streams and large rivers and you can fish from boat or shore, with minimal tackle.”

If you’ve been lured in, check out these quality bass fishing opportunities in Wisconsin or peek into the 2008 Fishing Report to see which waters biologists note as having high-quality bass fisheries.

The northern zone, inland water bass season runs from June 21 to March 1, 2009. For most waters there is a daily bag limit of five and a minimum length limit of 14 inches.
