U.P. moose study comes up short
Herd hasn't grown as fast as estimated; biologist blames hot summer nights

BARAGA, Mich. — Don't tell a virile bull moose the female counterpart he's eyeing is "a hottie."
He'd much rather hear that "she's cool."
Some animal species prefer warm temperatures.
Moose, including those living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, do not.
"Moose are built for cold weather," said Rob Aho, a wildlife biologist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. "They do not do well in heat."
That may help explain why the state's fledgling moose herd is not expanding at the rate envisioned when the DNR began a moose restoration program in 1985.
