STOCKBRIDGE — Al Schumacher raises the rubber tip of a cane far above his head toward a dark corner of his farm workshop.

The 90-year-old Schumacher deftly pushes aside a coil of electric wire hung on a nail, unveiling the business end of a sturgeon spear: a blackened, three-tined hay fork.
