Title: Mississippi River main channel on thin ice!
Post by: mudbrook on March 03, 2010, 04:47:46 PM
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning ice fishermen of the main channel of the Mississippi River.

"Some ice fishers are still crossing the on foot to reach their favorite fishing spots," says DNR warden supervisor Steve Dewald.  "However, the warm sunshine and increased river flow from snow melt is taking its toll on the strength of the ice."

DeWald says some anglers are seeing just two inches of ice in spots that just recently had a foot of ice.

DeWald says areas with no currents, like backwaters, have much more ice, but anglers should still be cautious.

Ice shantys need to be removed from inland lakes, like Lake Neshonoc in West Salem, by March 7.
