It's looking more and more like Mother's Day will return to being a family holiday and not a fishing vacation in Minnesota.

A proposal to move Minnesota's fishing opener from Mother's Day in May to a week earlier is gaining steam at the Capitol. State Sen. Satveer Chaudhary, DFL-Fridley, said last week he's preparing a bill that would move fishing opener to a week earlier, and he's getting strong public support for it.

The bill will be introduced within the next two weeks.

"There are couple of pockets of concern, mostly about protections of spawning fish,'' he said last week. "But there's no other issue I've dealt with where more people have tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Why do we have this conflict with Mother's Day.' It makes no sense."

The Department of Natural Resources isn't taking a position on perhaps the most significant calendar change to Minnesota fishing in decades.
