Gun ownership ruling upholds Bill of Rights June 27, 2008
The U.S. Supreme Court ruling Thursday recognizing an individual's right to own a handgun is a victory for all the rights guaranteed in our Constitution. The fact that guns are increasingly used in crimes is insufficient justification for suspension of a constitutional guarantee.
The ruling is also in line with values widely held in Vermont, where guns are a deeply ingrained part of our culture. Hunters walking along the roadside carrying their guns is a common sight during hunting seasons here, while the state has one of the least restrictive laws for handguns, including few restraints on carrying concealed weapons.
The 5-4 ruling on a Washington gun-control law that virtually banned all handguns says the Constitution forbids "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home."
