Snowmobile clubs look for members as first trails open in Clark County
By Ben Schultz
Winter sports enthusiasts will have a chance to enjoy a long seaon for a change. With heavy snowfall early in the year and cold temperatures preventing it from melting, snowmobilers and skiers might easily have a couple months to hit the trail and hills.
Clark County forest trails are partially open, and another big storm might open the rest.
Mark Heil, Forestry and Parks administrator for Clark County, said there are almost 100 miles of trails available right now with the ATV loop open.
He cautioned enthusiasts not to be too hasty to hit the powder.
“Snow conditions are marginal at this time,” he said.
For the rest of the county, Heil said it won’t just take more snow, but also the right kind.
“They’re going to need a good six inches of good heavy snow, not this fluffy junk,” he said.
The county forest land is ready because it is relatively undisturbed most of the year, whereas other trails cross land that’s put to heavy use.
