Explore Minnesota Birding Report Update    July 20, 2012

Shorebirds are already traveling through Minnesota to southerly destinations. Anyone interested in shorebirds should check out the Shorebird Workshop offered August 3-5 in Milbank, SD, with most field trips in Minnesota. Please note that seats fill quickly. Birders will also want to consider the Henderson Hummingbird Hurrah Festival  held August 18 & 19. This is the only hummingbird festival in the Midwest. Workshops, garden tours, presentations, children's activities, a Hummingbird Mall, speakers and hummingbird banding are all part of this event.

The following information has been provided courtesy of the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union and their affiliates. This report is brought to you by ExploreMinnesota.com.

A Lazuli Bunting was seen and photographed at a feeder in Shoreview, Ramsey County on July 14th. It was at a private residence along Bristol Run Road, but no further information has been provided yet.

There was a secondhand report of a Ruff seen July 18th in Otter Tail County. To view this bird, check the wetlands and flooded fields at the intersection of County Road 1 and 170th Street, roughly four and one-half miles south of Fergus Falls.

A possible Little Blue Heron was reported on the 12th from Mississippi Point Park in Champlin, Hennepin County.

Southbound shorebirds reported recently include Semipalmated Plover, Sanderling, Stilt Sandpiper, White-Rumped Sandpiper, and Least Sandpiper.

Information in this statewide birding report is provided by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU), Minnesota's oldest and largest bird club. To submit a bird sighting, email the MOU birding report compiler at rba@moumn.org.
