Tomahawk, WI. Fishing Report 1.12.10

Hi folks,

Julio here with your ice fishing update.

The snowmobile trails opened up about 10 days ago, but until today the trails were not marked up across the lakes due to slush and just plain bad ice. It has improved, but I would not wander too far from the marked trails and keep it to a snowmobile or an ATV. You will definitely see the trail barrels as well as marked reflector sticks crossing area lakes.

We are starting to get some good walleye fishing coming from area flowages.

A 31 incher was caught on the Spirit and on Lake Nokomis, I know of a 29 incher caught and released. Small golden shiners on your favorite tip up in 3 to 5 foot of water either off rock bars or on the edge of the weedline is where the action is.

Northern Pike are the most active fish right now with many anglers reporting good catches. Pike are averaging 18 to 26 inches, the perfect pickling size.

Back bays or the edge of the weedline is again the popular spot. Size up your minnows to medium or large shiners. Keep your bait off the bottom by at least 2 feet and be sure to use a leader to prevent bite offs.

The pan fish bite is on the slow side right now. A few nice gills are coming off Lake Alice, but for a meal, drill a lot of holes and keep moving. It seems you catch one or two then it just shuts down. Waxies on your favorite ice jig is all that is needed for bait. They are predicting some warmer weather moving in next week. This should get the pan fish to bite better.

Next report I'll find out what local ice fishing tournaments are going on.

It seems to be really catching on as a family event and fun for all. So, until next report, keep your hooks sharp and I'll see you on the ice.
