Collegiate rowing regatta scheduled for Devil’s Lake May 2-3
DEVIL’S LAKE STATE PARK, Wis. – Anglers heading to Devil’s Lake State Park this coming weekend for the inland lakes fishing opener will be treated with an unusual sight, a major national collegiate rowing competition.
The main events will take place May 2 with racing shells and teams on the water from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. A single event is scheduled for May 3. Teams from eight eastern and Midwest universities and the University of Wisconsin-Madison will race in both men’s and women’s competitions.
“This is a very different but not totally new event for Devil’s Lake,” said Steve Schmelzer, Devil’s Lake State Park property manager. “Regattas were held for the enjoyment of area resort visitors in the late 1800s and most recently in 2012. We look forward to this exciting event and hope our visitors will also enjoy the weekend activities.
“The racing will take place more or less in the center of the lake between the north and south shores. Anglers still will be able to access most shoreline fishing spots and water craft can still be on the water. We only ask that boaters refrain from crossing the course during a race.”
All rules and regulations for entry to the park and for fishing remain. State park vehicle admission stickers or day passes are required and a current fishing license, if fishing is planned.
