Southern Lake Michigan Fishing Report: August 9, 2010

Kenosha Co.

    In Kenosha trollers have been catching some small chinooks in 50 to 75 feet of water. J-plugs, spoons, and some flies have all taken fish, and silvers and greens have been the most productive colors. Some rainbows have also been reported from trollers in 200 to 220 feet of water. Shore fishing in Kenosha has been generally slow for trout and salmon anglers but perch anglers have been catching some 10-11 inch ?keepers? off the south pier early in the morning. Both minnows and plastic jigs have been producing. Kenosha boaters looking for perch have been catching some at the rock breakwall, but action has been slow at the bubbler.

Racine Co.
    In Racine some chinooks and coho have been taken by trollers in 125 to 150 feet of water. Blue & silver spoons and J-plugs have been catching fish. Rainbows have also been biting in 200 to 220 feet of water. Shore anglers fishing for trout and salmon off the south pier have taken a few steelhead on blue & silver and green & silver spoons. Perch anglers fishing from shore have been catching some limits of 10 inch fish near the Pershing Park launch. Boats looking for perch have taken fair numbers at the south breakwater on crab tails, minnows, and shrimp.

Milwaukee Co.
    In Milwaukee trollers have been catching mostly chinooks, along with a few coho. Fish have been caught 30 to 40 feet down in 90 feet of water, and spoons have taken the majority of fish. Shore fishing effort in Milwaukee remains low, and few fish have been reported.

Ozaukee Co.
    There was light fishing effort from the ramps, piers, harbor/shore and Amsterdam Road ramp. There was action to report from the ramps, piers and shore. The temperature was in the mid to high 70?s, skies were cloudy and there was a light wind to the north or east. Port Washington Ramp: The water at the ramp was blue green with moderate to good clarity and the temperature was 58-62? F. Six of 15 boats interviewed caught fish, with an average of 4.6 fish. Chinook salmon, coho salmon, brown trout, rainbow trout and lake trout were caught. Fish were caught in 15 to 160 feet of water, between 20 and 70 feet down, with spoons, flies and j-plugs on planer boards, dipsy divers, downriggers and leadcore. Port Washington Utility: The water in the area was blue green with moderate to good clarity. Yellow perch were caught on jigs and minnows. A small rainbow trout was caught by an angler targeting perch. Carp were also caught. Port Washington Piers: The water off the lakeside was mostly calm with occasional choppiness, blue green with moderate to good clarity and 52-58? F. Yellow perch were caught on jigs and night crawlers. Two Chinook salmon and a brown trout were caught on alewives. Amsterdam Rd. Ramp: The water at the ramp was 60-62 ? F and blue green with moderate to good clarity and there was light wave action. No boats were interviewed.

Sheboygan Co.
    Watch out for the orange flags and buoys that mark commercial fishing trap nets set in Lake Michigan. Steer clear and give these markers a wide berth to avoid getting tangled and capsizing. Learn where the nets are set in "Watch Out for Trap Nets."

    There was moderate fishing effort from the ramps, light fishing effort from piers, shore and Cleveland ramp and no effort from Edgewater power plant. There was action to report from the ramp, shore and Cleveland ramp. On the 6th, the temperature was in the high 60?s, skies were cloudy and there was a light wind to the north/northeast. On the 7th, the temperature was in the high 70?s, skies were mostly cloudy and there was a moderate wind to the northeast. On the 8th, the temperature was in the low 80?s, skies were clear with clouds moving in later in the evening and there was a light to moderate wind to the east/northeast. Sheboygan Ramps: The water at the ramp was 68-70? F and brown with moderate clarity. Seven of 17 boats caught at least one fish, with and average of 1.9 fish. Chinook salmon, a rainbow trout and a brown trout were caught. Some fish were caught in 50 to 80 feet of water, 30 feet down, with spoons on planer boards and slide divers. Some fish were caught by boats jigging in the harbor. Sheboygan Piers: The water off the north pier was calm, blue green with moderate to good clarity. The water in the harbor was 66-70? F, brown with low clarity. The water on the lakeside of the south pier was choppy, 62-66? F, brownish blue green with moderate clarity. Sheboygan Shore: A small Chinook salmon was caught off North point on a spoon. Cleveland Ramp: The water at the ramp was choppy, 60-62? F, and light brown with low clarity. Chinook salmon were caught in 40 to 110 feet of water.
