Lifestyle of the “busy” beaver explored at Lake Maria State Park (October 31, 2007)
Wondering where the expression “busy as a beaver” comes from? Kids of all ages can learn about beavers and explore Lake Maria State Park during a special program being offered at the park at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 10.
“We will see beaver lodges and dams up close and learn about the unique lifestyle of this “busy” Minnesota mammal,” said Mark Crawford, park manager who will lead the program.
This event is part of the Minnesota State Park Junior Naturalist Program where kids, ages 7-14, can learn more about the plants and animals as they explore the parks. Junior Park Naturalists earn patches and certificates when they complete activity books on the three major resource areas of the state: prairies, pinelands and hardwoods.
Activities are designed to help kids locate native plants and study animal habitats. In addition, the program provides tips on observing birds and bugs and fun facts about the natural world. Activity books are available at any park office or visitor center.
People interested in attending the program at Lake Maria State Park, should call (763) 878-2325 to register in advance. The program is free, but a state park vehicle permit is required to enter the park. Permits are available at the park office and cost $5 for a daily permit or $25 for an annual permit.
Lake Maria State Park is located near Monticello about 50 miles from the Twin Cities. The park may be reached from the south via Highway 39 and Wright County Road 111, or from the north via Highway 8, 39 and County Road 111.
