Charters seek big fish, business
After slow '08, local captains hope to weather slow economy

For Captain John Zabel, it's tough to say what phenomenon — bad weather or a bad economy — is worse for business aboard his 35-foot Dead Reckon charter fishing boat.

Last year, Sheboygan's charter fishing fleet dealt with both, as the economy sputtered, gas prices rose and high winds regularly whipped up rough waters, leading to an unusually high number of canceled fishing outings.

As a result, the total number of charter fishing trips originating in the city fell — albeit slightly — for the first time in seven years.

"My business was down last year because of the economy, and because the weather was nasty," said Zabel, who runs one charter trip a day in summer when he's not working his day job as a Sheboygan police officer. "I canceled more trips last year than I can ever remember."
