Demons Second at Wisconsin SCTP State Trap Shoot
June 15, 2013 ? Waukesha Gun Club ? The BHS Demons Shooting Team has won the Wisconsin State Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Trap Championship three of the last four years and coming to the 2013 event the expectations were high once again. Being one of the first SCTP teams in the state, along with winning the 2011 SCTP National Championship and the 2012 SCTP High School National Championship, defeating the Burlington bunch has been the target of many of the state teams.

On a hot and muggy day in Waukesha, thirty-five teams from across Wisconsin with 735 young athletes took their shot at the SCTP State title. The level of competition in this year?s event far exceeded any youth trap event in the state with 220 of the 735 shooters breaking 90 or more of the 100 targets. Fifteen of the 26 varsity teams broke 450 or more of the 500 possible targets.

When the last of nearly 75,000 shots were fired, the two teams that train, practice and compete at the Burlington Conservation Club were one-two at the top of the scoreboard. The final result however was a surprise as the Waterford High School Trap Team had edged out the neighboring Demons by two targets to take the gold.

The Wolverines top-five of Brett Strasser, Hunter Swan, Philip Davis, Travis Shecterle and Sam Gultch tallied 487 of 500 to the Demons Cody Schilz, Christian Jensen, Myles Walker, Melanie Uhlenhake and Nolan Schenning?s tally of 485.  Jefferson High School took the bronze at 481.

Demons Junior Varsity team of Brian Morris, Jason Meisner, Courtenay Krusemark, Scott Matson and Cody Kruecher totaled 466 also brought home silver medals trailing Wilmot by just two targets.

The Demons Intermediate Advanced (grades 5 to 8) team may have put up the most impressive score of the event with Ethan Jenson, Hunter Conrad, Cody McCarthy, Weston Uhlenhake and Cullen Kruser breaking 474 targets to take the gold by 28 markers over Central and 37 over Jefferson.

Burlington?s Intermediate Entry team of Courtney Uhlenhake, Daniel Gardner, Josh Mullenbach, Jacob Ventura and Kali Nielson placed fifth while the Rookies (up to 5th grade) team of Wyatt Wilken, Ben Kumprey, William McCarthy, Kalvin Johnson and John Kubiak won gold with 371.

As tight as the scores were for teams, the individuals were even tighter. In the Varsity division alone there were eight 99?s, seven 98?s and seven 97?s. Demon seniors Cody Schilz and Christian Jensen both broke 99?s and finished second and fourth based on reverse-runs.

Demon Intermediate Advanced athletes also took second and fourth with Ethan Jensen?s 97 and Hunter Conrad?s 96. Wyatt Wilken and Ben Kumprey brought home the gold and silver in the Rookie division with 87 and 86 targets respectively.

Lady Demons also had a good day with Melanie Uhlenhake taking bronze in Varsity with 95 and Mariah Kerr fifth with 94. Courtenay Krusemark was forth in Junior Varsity ladies with a 93. Courtney Uhlenhake brought home the Gold in Intermediate Entry for her 88 while Kali Neilsen was fifth with 73.

Two Demon shooters were in Colorado Springs attending the USA Shooting Junior Olympics and were unable to compete in the SCTP State Shoot. However, both made the most of their journey as Alexa McCarthy won the J2 (age 15-18) silver medal in Ladies Bunker Trap breaking 96 of 125 targets. Jordan Hintz placed in the top-twenty in Men?s Bunker Trap with a 108 score and then finished fourth in the Men?s Double Trap event with a career best score of 131 out of 150. The fourth place finish earned Hintz his second straight berth on the USAS Shooting Junior Olympic team.

The BHS Demons Shooting Team will compete at the SCTP National Championships from July 15th to 20th at the World Recreation and Sporting Complex in Sparta, IL. The Demons will compete in Sporting Clays, Skeet, Trap and the Scholastic Pistol Program championship events.
