Gray Wolf Depredation Alert Update

9/18/10     Jackson     Bear Bluff     1 dog injured (German shorthair pointer, female, 3 yrs)

Bear Bluff Pack, Jackson County

Wildlife Services has confirmed that a wolf injured a German shorthair pointer on September 18th. The report indicates that the wolf approached a hunter within 50 feet, and when he got in his vehicle, was right in front of the vehicle. This is believed to be the first verified attack by wolves on a bird-hunting dog in a bird hunting situation in Wisconsin. The Bear Bluff pack responsible for the attacks, included 5 wolves last winter, and a yearling female (778F) and adult female (790F) were captured & collared in this pack this summer. Pups were produced in the spring as well. The recent attack was the first attack in a hunting/training situation for this pack in 2010.

**Caution: Traps to be set
There have been numerous incidents of close approaches by wolves to people by this pack, and there has been extensive work done by WDNR and USDA-Wildlife Services to create aversive conditioning and attempt to haze the wolves away from cranberry beds and areas of human activity, but the pack has become overly habituated to people. As a result, lethal control actions for this pack are beginning to used to address human safety concerns. Trapping of wolves will begin, and hunters with dogs using the area will need to be cautious of both wolves, and avoid areas with traps. General areas with traps will be posted along forest roads ahead of locations where traps will be set.

The caution area includes Cranberry Road on the east, State Highway 54 along the north, Lone Pine Lane and Goodyear Road on the west, and the Jackson/Monroe County line and County HH on the south. Hunters are urged to exercise great caution if they intend to use this area.

9/19/10     Oneida     Pelican Lake     1 dog killed (Redbone, male, 4 yrs)

Pelican Lake Pack, Oneida County

On September 19th, Wildlife Services confirmed that wolves killed a bear hound while hunting on county lands in the Town of Enterprise northwest of Pelican Lake. Killed was a 4 year old male Redbone. The Pelican Lake Pack was responsible for the attack, which consisted of 3 wolves last winter. Pups were likely produced this spring. In separate incidents (July 25 and August 14), two other hounds were killed by the same pack. All hunters and dog owners are urged to be aware of the caution area shown on the map below and to minimize conflicts with wolves and their dogs within this site. The caution area follows U.S. Highway 8 and 45 to the north and east, County Highways G and Q to the south, and State Highway 17 on the west.
