Hunters use road kill to earn a buck

Associated Press - October 23, 2007 10:25 AM ET

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - The Department of Natural Resources says some deer hunters are cheating the earn-a-buck program.

The idea is to shoot a doe in order to earn a chance to kill a buck in some counties. It's meant to trim the overpopulation of deer.

But, the DNR says some hunters are taking the easy way out and using road kill to register to shoot a buck.

At the Gander Mountain registry in Green Bay, staff are trained by the DNR to look for damaged does (DOHZ). Store manager Don Kirby says most of the time, deer hit by vehicles have significant damage.

DNR warden supervisor George Protogere warns hunters it's illegal to substitute road kill for a hunted doe. Besides a fine, hunting privileges can be revoked.
