(Wisconsin) UPCOMING EVENTS AT STATE PARKS, FORESTS, AND TRAILS

•   Harrington Beach State Park, Belgium, (262) 285-3015 or (262) 338-8614 or (262) 894-9756 - Public Viewing Night. Explore the night sky with the Northern Cross Science Foundation at the observatory in the park. Sponsored by Northern Cross Science Foundation. Puckett's Pond. 6-11 p.m.
•   Kettle Moraine State Forest—Northern Unit, Campbellsport, (920) 533-8322 - Nature Storytime: Slow-poke Porcupines. Listen! Do you hear that mumbling? It's a slow-poke porcupine. You'll be surprised as we uncover the amazing facts about these forest dwellers. This hour of nature fun awaits 3- to 6-year-olds with accompanying adults. Ice Age Visitor Center. 9:30-10:30 a.m. Halloween Nature Hikes. Duck! The things with wings are invading the forest. Join us for a fun-filled stroll through the dark autumn woods to meet some winged characters, including a wild turkey, a blue darner dragonfly, a monarch butterfly and a little brown bat. This is not a scary hike and is appropriate for those over 5 years of age. Groups leave every 6 minutes. The last hike leaves at 8:30 pm. Each hike last about one hour. While waiting for your hike, enjoy playing some fun-filled games, making a craft to take home, or snacking by the glow of a campfire. In the event of severe weather, the event will be canceled for the night. Long Lake Recreation Area. 6:30-9:30 p.m.

•   Sandhill Wildlife Area, Babcock, (715) 884-6333 - Advanced Outdoor Photography Class. Professional photographer Doug Alft will show how to take outdoor photographs from blinds during the autumn migration. Topics also include settings, light, aspect, and other elements for capturing that perfect shot. Bring your own camera, camera manual, camera accessories, sleeping bag and mat. The skills center will supply instruction, two meals and refreshments. Registration deadline October 10. Outdoor Skills Center.

•   Havenwoods State Forest, Milwaukee, (414) 527-0232 - One Wild Saturday Morning: Night Animals. Who’s that moving in the shadows at night? Drop in and learn what animals are active at night, discover the adaptations they have for moving in the dark, make a night animal to take home, and much more. Environmental Awareness Center. 9 a.m. - noon. No admission sticker required.

•   Kohler-Andrae State Park, Sheboygan, (920) 451-4080 - Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants. Hike with John Johnston to search for the wild edible and medicinal plants found at Kohler-Andrae. Hen will share tips on using these unique and interesting plants. Wear comfortable shoes. The hike lasts about an hour. Meet at camp host site. 2 p.m.
•   Lake Kegonsa State Park, Stoughton, (608) 873-9695 - Candlelight Hike. Enjoy a brisk fall evening walking along the 1.2-mile White Oak Nature Trail, which will be lit with hundreds of glowing jack-o-lanterns and luminaries. When you are finished, warm up by the bonfire and enjoy refreshments sold by the LKSP Friends Group. Grills will be available for cooking. Sorry, no pets are allowed on the White Oak Nature Trail. Weather conditions permitting. White Oak Nature Trail. 6-9 p.m.
•   Richard Bong State Recreation Area, Kansasville, (262) 878-5600 - Geocaching Basics. Heard about geocaching but didn't know how to start? Have a global positioning system (GPS) unit that's never been out of the box? Join us for this introductory session to learn the basics-how to use a GPS, download coordinates and then you will go out to actually find a cache. Bring your GPS unit if you have one. Meet at Visitor Center and be prepared to drive. 3-6 p.m.
•   Roche-A-Cri State Park, Friendship, (608) 339-6881 - Pumpkin Walk and Halloween Hike. Free games and face painting 3-4:30 p.m. Non-Haunted Hay Rides 3-5 p.m. Haunted Hay Rides 6-8:30 p.m. Last tickets sold at 8:30 p.m. Hay rides $2. Food and drink concession available. Free admission. Hike around the 1-mile jack-o-lantern-lit path. Naturalist Janna Misener will give a presentation at 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by Friends of Roche-A-Cri State Park. Starts at office picnic area. 3-8:30 p.m.

•   Willow River State Park, Hudson, (715) 386-5931 - Full Moon Hike. Local birding experts Ed and Angie Coloski will present a slide show about whooping cranes and geese. Then head out on an easy walk to see what’s out in the full moon. Dress for the weather. Nature Center. 6-7:30 p.m.
