October public events at the Arboretum   

GENERAL ARBORETUM EVENT INFORMATION:
Events are open to the public, and tours take place regardless of weather unless the naturalist decides it would be unsafe. Call 608-263-7888 if in doubt. Unless otherwise noted, public events are free and tours begin at the Arboretum Visitor Center. Visit our Web site at uwarboretum.org
 
Arboretum Visitor Center Hours: Weekdays 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Weekends 12:30 - 4 p.m.

October 6 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Wingra Oak Savanna." Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. Groups welcome with advance notice. Meet at the gravel parking lot along Arbor Drive just off Monroe Street. For more information: 265-5214 or mlfarrior@wisc.edu
 
October 7 - Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Grady Tract Walk: "Butterflies and Flowers." Butterflies make stops for nectar on fall-blooming asters, adding to the beauty of the prairie. We will look for the five species of gentian that grow here as well as asters and goldenrods. Meet at the Grady Tract parking lot located at the southeast corner of the West Beltline and Seminole Highway.
 
October 7 - Sunday, 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
Arboretum Tour:  Free narrated tours aboard the Badger Trolley begin at the Visitor Center. Tours last approximately 45 minutes. View the prairies and woodlands in beautiful fall color and learn more about the Arboretum's history and purpose.
 
October 7 - Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Woodlands." Enjoy what is usually the peak for fall color in the restored woodlands of the Arboretum.
 
October 11 – Thursday, 5-8 p.m.
Friends of the Arboretum Event: “Sixth Annual Leopold Restoration Awards Program.” Fee and registration required. Phone (608) 263-7760 for information.
 
October 13 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Core Area and Curtis Prairie."  Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. October 13 - Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Earth Partnership for Families: “Squirrels -- Woodland Friends or Foes?”  Everyone loves these bushy-tailed acrobats … or DO they?  Enjoy fall weather at the Arboretum while participating in a harmless “squirrel hunt” and learning to appreciate these clever rascals through games and activities.
 
October 14 - Sunday, 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

Arboretum Family Walk: "Why do Leaves Change Color?" Families can learn how to appreciate and understand the wonder of fall color in native trees and prairie grasses.
 
October 18 – Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
Friends of the Arboretum Trip: “Geology of Wisconsin Dells.”  Fee and registration required. Phone (608) 263-7760 for information.
 
October 20 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon

Arboretum Class: “All About Owls.” Look, listen, and learn about the fascinating world of owls. This class includes a slide show, owl “music” and stories. Instructor: Sylvia Marek, Arboretum naturalist.  Fee: $13.50 ($12 for members of Friends of the Arboretum). Registration required. Contact the Arboretum for a registration form, or register and pay online at www.uwarboretum.org
 
October 21 - Sunday, 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

October 27 - Saturday, 6:30-8 p.m.
Arboretum Night Walk: “Preparing for Winter.” This is a pleasant time of year in the Arboretum -- voracious hordes of mosquitoes have diminished, and over-wintering birds and mammals are busy gathering food.
 
October 28 - Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Tour of the Lost City." While we always tour this area around Halloween, there is really nothing spooky about this abandoned dream of a "Venice of the North." Learn more about this failed 1920s residential area and how understanding the land can be important for proper development.
