Explore Minnesota Birding Report Update  August 27, 2012 
 
 
 Bird enthusiasts look forward to the month of September when bird migration intensifies. One place to view an amazing number of raptors is Hawk Ridge in Duluth , with the very popular Hawk Weekend Festival held September 14-16. Not only do participants have a chance to view an amazing number of birds, they can also enjoy a variety of field trips and workshops, interpretive programs, raptor banding, passerine demonstrations, optics displays, merchandise, and more! Another special event is the Fall Wildlife Festival offered at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Zimmerman on September 29, with a wide array of educational displays, fun activities, games, nature walks, and interesting programs offered throughout the day.

The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:

On August 17th, a Parasitic Jaeger was reported from the beach at the recreation area of Park Point in Duluth.

Two Carolina Wrens were seen on August 22nd by Jeanne Tanamachi in her Lauderdale backyard in Ramsey County. The birds have since been heard in the neighborhood near the intersection of Summer and Pleasant streets. Another was seen on the 20th by Lance Vrieze in his yard in Rochester, Olmsted County.

On the 21st, a Black-Billed Magpie was along Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge's Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive. It was seen just past Mile Marker 1.

Red Crossbills have been moving into the state in good numbers, and they have been reported from the counties of Hennepin, Lincoln, Mower, Polk, St. Louis, and Sherburne. Other recent southbound migrants include Dunlin, Common Nighthawk, Olive-Sided Flycatcher, Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher, Red-Breasted Nuthatch, Swainson's Thrush, Wilson's Warbler, Connecticut Warbler, and Henslow's Sparrow.
