BHS Demon Shooters Excel at Skeet and Sporting Clays

The BHS Demons Shooting Team came up two birds short a couple weeks ago at the WI State Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Trap Championships? But nothing could stop the Demons varsity shooters from sweeping the sporting clays and skeet championships easily giving the Burlington bunch the SCTP high-over-all state title.

June 22nd, Wern Valley Sportsmen?s Club - Sporting Clays simulates the unpredictability of live-quarry shooting, offering a great variety of trajectories, angles, speeds, elevations, distances and target sizes. While some young athletes struggled with the difficulty of the event, the 100-target course at Wern Valley was no match for Demon seniors Jordan Hintz (96), Myles Walker (93) and Cody Schilz (88) tallying an impressive 277 of 300 score and easily covered the field of twelve varsity teams by over thirty targets. The Shooting Tigers of Warrens took silver and third place went to the Ozaukee Youth Trap Team.

The Demons intermediate advance squad of Cody McCarthy (88), Hunter Conrad (79) and Ethan Jensen (73) also took the gold by seventeen over the Sauk County Youth Shooting Team and the Central Falcons Trap & Skeet team of Westosha.

Hintz hit the first 60 targets in-route to the varsity gold medal, in fact Demons shooters took six of the top ten places in the varsity category. Mariah Kerr (83) and Kaylee Lancour (74) won the ladies varsity gold and bronze medals. Courtenay Krusemark won the ladies junior varsity silver, Cody McCarthy the intermediate advanced gold. Wyatt Wilken was the only rookie shooter to participate, winning the gold for his 52 score.

June 29th, Sauk Prairie Trap and Skeet Club ? Eighteen members of the BHS team made the two and a half hour journey to the State Skeet Championships in Sauk Prairie. The weather threatened all day with scattered rain showers, wind and sun all rotating through the day.

The Demons senior trio of Walker (97), Hintz (94) and Schilz (93) tallied 284 and once again led the Demons to an impressive 31-target advantage over Racine Lutheran High and 37 over Milwaukee Marquette. Eight teams fielded varsity entries from across the state.

Walker brought home the varsity gold medal for his performance while Hintz tied for third, but was denied the bronze on reverse run. Demon shooters again occupied six of the top ten places. After a slow start, Zach Hahn ran the last 50-straight for the Demons. Mariah Kerr (86) earned another ladies varsity gold with Courtenay Krusemark (74) taking the ladies junior varsity honors.

Demons intermediate advanced of Hunter Conrad (95), Cody McCarthy (90), and Weston Uhlenhake (78) came up one bird short of the gold to the host Sauk County Youth Shooting Team with Conrad and McCarthy winning individual gold and bronze.  The Demons rookie squad of John Kubiak (64), William McCarthy (51), and Wyatt Wilken (51) took the gold team and swept the individual awards.

2012 BHS graduate Ethan Kerr brought home the collegiate silver for his 96.

The Midway USA Foundation made contributions to three Wisconsin Scholastic Shooting Trust endowment accounts for the state high over all champions. This is based on the combination of the three SCTP state shoots; trap, skeet and sporting clays. By finishing second in trap and first place in both skeet and sporting clays gave the BHS Demons Shooting team the HOA championship again for 2013 over Central Falcons Trap and Skeet and Milwaukee Marquette High School.

All young athletes that took part in one of the three SCTP State Shoots qualified for the opportunity to compete in the SCTP National Championships from July 15th to 20th at the World Recreation and Sporting Complex in Sparta, IL. The Demons will compete in Sporting Clays, Skeet, Trap and the Scholastic Pistol Program championship events.  The Demons are the defending SCTP National High School Champions in trap and they also won the High All Around for top high school team in the country at last years National Championships and expectations are high for the team again at this year?s competition.
