GENERAL ARBORETUM EVENT INFORMATION:
Events are open to the public, and tours take place regardless of weather unless the naturalist decides it would be unsafe. Call 608-263-7888 if in doubt. Unless otherwise noted, public events are free and tours begin at the Arboretum Visitor Center. Visit our Web site at uwarboretum.org
 
Arboretum Visitor Center Hours: Weekdays 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Weekends 12:30 - 4 p.m.
 
 
November 3 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Wingra Oak Savanna." Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. Groups welcome with advance notice. Meet at the gravel parking lot along Arbor Drive just off Monroe Street. For more information: 265-5214 or mlfarrior@wisc.edu
 
November 3 - Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Class: “Natural Writings II.” Experience a variety of styles and viewpoints while enjoying readings from many different nature writers. A bibliography will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a favorite author to share. Although comments are encouraged, this class is primarily designed to expose participants to new authors rather than as a book discussion. Natural Writings I not required for this class. Instructor: Susan Simonson, Arboretum Naturalist. Fee: $13.50 ($12 for members of Friends of the Arboretum). Registration required. Contact the Arboretum for a registration form, or register and pay online at www.uwarboretum.org
 
November 4 - Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Effigy Mounds." The Arboretum contains some rare, intact mound groups out of the thousands built in our area more than 1,000 years ago. On this tour, which features the mounds in Wingra and Gallistel Woods, you'll learn about these ancient earthworks and the cultures that built them.
 
November 10 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Core Area and Curtis Prairie."  Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. November 10 - Saturday, 1 p.m.
Arboretum Earth Partnership for Families: “Time of the Eagle.” We’ll base our program on events in this book, written by Stephanie Golightly Lowden of Madison, about an Ojibwe girl’s journey to find her relatives after smallpox takes most of her immediate family. Learn how Autumn Dawn survived and took care of her younger brother. November can be chilly, so wear warm clothing and bring your hat!
 
November 11 - Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Glacial Geology." The Arboretum has many features that illustrate the glacial geology of the Madison area. Explore the drumlins, moraines, erratics and glacial lake beds that are visible here.
 
November 11 - Sunday, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Arboretum Family Walk: "Preparing for Winter." Animals and plants that live here need to prepare for winter long before the first snow flies. This short walk introduces young people to how plants and animals prepare for winter.
 
November 17 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Grady Tract." Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. Groups welcome with advance notice. Meet at the Grady Tract parking lot. For more information: 265-5214 or mlfarrior@wisc.edu
 
November 18 - Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Thinking Like an Arboretum." Aldo Leopold's essay, "Thinking Like a Mountain," is the basis for this tour about the relationship between predators and prey, and the diversity of ecosystems.
 
November 24 - Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
Arboretum Ecological Restoration Work Party: "Core Area and Curtis Prairie."  Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. November 24 - Saturday, 6:30-8 p.m.
Arboretum Night Walk: "Stars and Owls." Listen for the mating calls of great horned owls on this full moon night, and look for winter constellations such as Orion.
 
November 25 - Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m.
Arboretum Walk: "Sampler." Join our naturalist and see what is going on in the restored woodlands, wetlands and prairies near the Visitor Center.
