Post by: mudbrook on November 01, 2007, 09:59:50 AM
Public can learn more about proposed Lake Vermilion State Park at open house Nov. 7 (October 31, 2007)

The public will have an opportunity to learn more about the proposed state park on Lake Vermilion during an open house on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Tower-Soudan School Cafeteria/Multi-purpose Room at 415 North Second St., Tower.

Officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the members of the Commissioner’s Advisory Task Force on the proposed Lake Vermilion State Park will be on hand to answer questions about the project and the task force process.

The proposal is to acquire approximately 3,000 acres of land, including approximately 5 miles of shoreline, for a state park. The property is currently owned by U. S. Steel and will otherwise be developed for private housing.

This park would provide the “up at the lake” experience for all Minnesotans, plus the cultural experience of the underground mine at the adjacent Soudan State Park. The vision is to make the Lake Vermilion facility a flagship park for the region, with the opportunity to create a “next generation state park” and to tie in with other recreation and cultural experiences in the area.
