Southern Lake Michigan Fishing Report: May 6, 2010

Kenosha Co.
The coho have arrived and trollers fishing out of Kenosha have had success fishing anywhere from 20-60 feet of water just south of the harbor. Orange dodgers and small flies, crankbaits, and spoons fished high in the water column are all taking fish, and a few kings have also been mixed in. Coho are good size this year and are ranging from 1-6 lbs. Fishing should improve as more and more fish move up the lake; early mornings have been best as the bite usually shuts down an hour or two after sunrise. Shore fishing in Kenosha remains slow.
Racine Co.
In Racine the steelhead run on the Root River is just about done, as fish have become quite scarce. Trollers in Racine have had little action to report, although those who have gone south to Kenosha have been catching coho.
Milwaukee Co.
In Milwaukee trollers found a few browns and lake trout off of the filtration plant before the high winds and storms moved in. Trollers working 40-70 feet of water had decent action on spoons and crankbaits fished off of either downriggers or planer boards. Stable weather will be needed to calm the lake down and improve fishing. Overall, Milwaukee shore fishing remains slow. Smelt fishermen have been taking a few smelt from the Jones Island area when the weather has been good.
Ozaukee Co.
There was light fishing effort from the pier and no effort from the ramps, harbor/shore, utility or Sauk creek. There was no action to report. The temperature was in the mid 60?s, skies were mostly cloudy but cleared up by the early afternoon, and there was a light wind to the east that got stronger as the day went on. Port Washington Ramp: The water at the ramp was 50-52? F, light brown with moderate clarity. Port Washington Utility: The water in the area was blue green with low to moderate clarity. Port Washington Piers: The water outside the pier was 44-46? F, blue green with moderate to good clarity and the water off the pier was calm. The water inside of the pier was brownish green with moderate clarity. Sauk Creek: The water was 54-56? F with good clarity but a brown tinge; the water level was low and current was moderate.
Sheboygan Co.
There was very light fishing effort on the Sheboygan River with some action to report. There was no effort from Edgewater power plant or Weeden?s creek. The temperature was in the low 50?s at sunrise and in the low 60?s by mid morning, skies were mostly cloudy with some rain in the early morning and there was a light wind to the east. Sheboygan Ramps: The water at the ramp was 58? F, brown with low to moderate clarity. No anglers were interviewed. Sheboygan Piers: The water off the lakeside of the north pier was blue green with a little mud along the pier, low to moderate clarity and no wave action. The water off the lakeside of the south pier was choppy, 52? F and brownish green with low clarity. The water in the harbor was 58-60? F, and brown with low clarity. Sheboygan Shore: The water in the marina was brown with low to moderate clarity. Pigeon River: The water in the river was 58-60? F, milky brown with low clarity, the water level was moderate and the current was moderate. Sheboygan River: The water at the mouth of the river was 60-62? F, brown with low clarity. The water upstream was 62? F, brown with low clarity, the water level was moderate and the current was moderate. Smallmouth bass and rock bass were caught in the morning at Kohler dam on minnow flies. Weedens Creek: The water in the creek was 54-56? F with good clarity but a brown tinge; the water level was low and the current was moderate.
